Travel to Batanes, Philippines

Since I can not travel to other places at this time, I have taken out the photos that one of my grandsons and I took in Batanes March 2019.

Batanes Province is located at the northernmost part of the Philippines. It is the smallest province in terms of population and land area. It is also known as "Home of the Winds". We have gone to three of its ten islands.

Let me show you the pictures.

Upon arrival in Batanes, we were taken to this restaurant for lunch.

Soup with fern leaves.

Fern salad with tomatoes

Our rice wrapped in a leaf  of a breadfruit tree.

Rice that is cooked with garlic, onions and turmeric.

This is called "lunis", a traditional dish of preserved pork. It was crispy and yummy.

Jumong
I think these were banana fritters

"Dios mamajes"  may God repay you.

Jumong at the Sto Domingo Church

Our guide told us that Batanes is like New Zealand. The hills and the water, yes but not the cattle. I found that New Zealand cattle are better fed than the few cattle I saw in Batanes.

Overlooking Basco lighthouse in Naidi Hills

This is called vakul, a head gear that  is worn by women as protection from rain and sun. It is made of vuyavuy, date palm leaves.

A stone house with cogon roof is called "sinadumparan".

Our tour guide mentioned that they call this "trysikool"

We had to wait for a faluwa (boat) here to go to Sabtang, one of the inhabited islands of Batanes.

After the tour, we went to our lodging place and this is how the towels were presented

Valugan Boulder Beach

Saw this etched in one of the boulders

The places I have seen in Batanes have been litter free. Seeing a plastic bottle left in the beach is uncommon.

I wonder when travel will go back to normal.
